Peter & Wendy, broadcast as a TV special on ITV over Christmas 2015, is a re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s much loved classic novel Peter Pan, but reinterprets this timeless story for the modern age while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. The drama also establishes a connection with Great Ormond Street Hospital, the world famous children’s hospital that has become irrevocably associated with Peter Pan, and to which J.M. Barrie handed over the rights to his work.
The origins of Peter & Wendy came from Headline Pictures’ producer Stewart Mackinnon, who was a great admirer of Barrie’s work and had for many years dreamt of creating a new version of Peter Pan. After forming a relationship with and gaining the support of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, Stewart approached the BAFTA winning screenwriter Adrian Hodges, who came up with the idea of adding a modern element to the classic tale, and setting it in Great Ormond Street Hospital, where a young girl awaiting a life changing heart-operation imagines her own version of Neverland. BAFTA winning director Diarmuid Lawrence then joined the project along with cast members Stanley Tucci to play the three roles of Captain Hook, Mr Darling, and GOSH surgeon Mr Wylie, Laura Fraser as Mrs Darling, and Paloma Faith as Tinker Bell.
The film was shot in the UK and Luxembourg over the summer of 2015, and Maurizio Malagnini then composed his magical music score to accompany the film.
